The Fear and Greed Index is 18 (Extreme Fear) as of October 16, 2026.
The Fear and Greed Index measures stock market sentiment on a 0-100 scale from seven inputs: market momentum against the S&P 500 125-day average, stock price strength, stock price breadth, the put/call options ratio, market volatility (VIX), junk bond demand, and safe haven demand. Readings of 0-25 are Extreme Fear, 25-45 Fear, 45-55 Neutral, 55-75 Greed, and 75-100 Extreme Greed.
Low readings mean investors are fearful, which contrarian investors read as a potential buying opportunity, while high readings mean investors are greedy and markets may be overextended. The index is a sentiment gauge, not a timing signal, and it can stay at an extreme for weeks.
Correlation varies by ticker. This site computes the Pearson correlation coefficient between the index and any stock or ETF you enter, over whichever date range you are viewing, so you can measure the relationship rather than assume it. A coefficient near +1 means sentiment and price moved together, near -1 means they moved opposite, and near 0 means no linear relationship.
