This policy explains what personal information Fear & Greed (“we”, “us”) collects when you use this site, why we collect it, how long we keep it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it. It applies to the Fear & Greed website and its public API.
Fear & Greed is an independently operated market-data and sentiment research site. For the purposes of the UK GDPR and EU GDPR we are the data controller for the information described below. You can reach us at patrickv.disc@gmail.com.
Information you give us. If you create an account we store your email address, your display name, and — where you sign in with a password rather than Google — a salted hash of that password. We never store your password in readable form. If you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address, profile image URL, and an account identifier from Google; we do not receive your Google password.
Information you create on the site. Watchlist entries, saved chart snapshots, alert rules and the email address you attach to them, forum threads and replies, likes, and any API keys you generate. Forum posts and the display name attached to them are public.
Information collected automatically. Our hosting provider records standard server logs — IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp, and response status — which we use for security, abuse prevention, and API rate limiting. We do not operate third-party advertising or behavioural analytics trackers on this site.
Information stored in your browser rather than by us. Preferences such as theme, density, language, local watchlist state, and notification settings are held in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device and are not transmitted to us. See our Cookies Policy for detail.
We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16, and we do not collect special category data (health, biometrics, political opinions, and similar). Please do not submit such information through the forum or contact channels.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not share it with data brokers, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles or to make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
We share personal information only with service providers who process it on our instructions, under contract, and only as needed to run the site:
We may also disclose information where we are legally required to do so, or where it is necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims. If the site is ever transferred to a new operator, account data may transfer with it, and we will tell you before that happens.
Our providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Where personal data leaves the UK or EEA, transfers are covered by the provider's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent approved safeguard.
Account data is kept for as long as your account is open. If you close your account, or ask us to delete it, we remove your account record and the watchlist entries, alerts, saved snapshots, and API keys attached to it within 30 days, except where we must retain something to meet a legal obligation. Public forum posts may remain visible but will be detached from your identity on request. Server logs are retained for a short operational period, typically no more than 90 days.
The site is served over HTTPS. Passwords are stored only as salted hashes, session cookies are HTTP-only, and API keys are scoped to your account and revocable by you at any time. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of information transmitted to us, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect it. If a breach affects your rights, we will notify you and the relevant regulator as the law requires.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, receive it in a portable form, and withdraw any consent you have given. If you are in the UK or EEA you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office. If you are a California resident you have the rights to know, delete, correct, and opt out of sale or sharing under the CCPA/CPRA; as noted above, we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined.
To exercise any of these rights, email patrickv.disc@gmail.com. We will respond within one month. We will not treat you differently for exercising them.
The site links to and displays data from third-party sources, including company logos and market data feeds. Those parties operate under their own privacy policies, which we do not control.
We may update this policy as the site changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised, and material changes will be announced on the changelog.
